Combine several frames of one scene
Drop one bracket: the same scene shot darker and brighter. You get one picture with both the sky and the shadows to develop.
How the frames are combined
Raw data is linear, so each frame’s shutter, aperture and ISO say how much light it caught. Each pixel comes from the frames that recorded it well, neither noisy nor clipped. The result is a wider negative to develop, not a finished photo.
